Objectives: The activities proposed here aims at developing a broad study on Canadian Studies perspectives in Brazil. The idea is to organize a research group (to be recognized by CNPq and CAPES) on the topic. Many Brazilian researchers will be invited to work as a team in order to raise brazilians expectations about Canada and Canadian studies. This research project can help us to map and redesign canadian studies in Brazil having in mind the priorities established by the Canadian Government as well as our own priorities. In order to carry out this investigation, a kind of survey will be done. Couses will be offered in many brazilian cities with the goal of awakening our academic and professional population about the possibilities of linkages, agreements and partnerships with Canadian institutions, schools and Universities. This work will last a year and at the end of this group activity, a Seminar can take place as a way of sharing our results to the academic community.
Expected results: Our expected results are: mapping real possibilities of Canadian studies in Brazil considering a multidisciplinary perspective; awakening people about the possibilities of linkages, agreements and partnerships with canadian institutions and Universities; contributing to the constructions of knowledge about Canada in Brazil; increasing the number of brazilian people interested in becoming member of ABECAN as well as member of this research community; achieving a multidisciplinary scope within the studies carried out in our country and our Canadian Studies Centres. Depending on the number of researchers involved in this project, a publication can be another kind of result achieved.
Publications: Mapping Canadian Studies in Brazil: Expectations and possibilities.
This publication aims to share the results of a broad study carried out in Brazil. In order to mapping expectations and possibilities about canadian studies considering a multidisciplinary perspective, a group of brazilian researchers worked collaboratively during a year (2010-2011). A survey was conducted with grad and undergrad students from important Universities in the five regions of Brazil. The main research questions of this study were: What do Brazilian students think of Canada? Which disciplines/themes do Brazilian students think can be studied in/about Canada? What do Brazilian students know about Canada-Brazil relations? The results of this inquiry can contribute to guide Canadian Studies programs and policies in this country and also to pose some relevant issues do be considered when rethinking canadian studies in Brazil.
